It was just recently when I found out who the mayor of Dildo is and boy, you wouldn’t believe the story behind it!
Let me tell you, Dildo is a small town in Newfoundland, Canada with a population of 1,943. But it isn’t that small town with a funny name that makes it stand out. The mayor of Dildo is what makes the town so interesting.
Her name is Sheila Kirby and she’s been the mayor of Dildo since 2006. While there are plenty of people in town who would love to have her job, she’s the only one who dared to take it on.
From the beginning, Sheila had to fight against criticism and ridicule from people who believed that a woman shouldn’t be the mayor of such a small town. Most towns in Newfoundland have male mayors, so Sheila’s election was a big surprise for everyone.
But Sheila was nothing if not determined. She showed great resilience and determination when she ran against two opponents in 2006, and won by a landslide!
The residents of Dildo quickly saw that she was the right person for the job and she proved to be a great leader. Under her supervision, the town has grown and flourished. She has improved the infrastructure of the town and has helped businesses succeed.
What really stands out, though, is how she handles the criticism and the jokes about her. She shrugs it off and continues to do her job with a smile on her face. I quite admire that about her. It’s incredible that Sheila has managed to stay in office for 14 years when almost everyone expected her to fail.
She hasn’t done it alone though, as she has been supported by the entire town. She is an inspiration, not only for dildos the people of Dildo, but for everyone who hears her story.
During her time as mayor, several fun proposals and initiatives have been approved, including the famous ‘Dildo Dash’, an annual five kilometer foot race that has become an important part of the town’s events calendar. Every year, hundreds of people, including people from other towns, come to Dildo to join the fun.
Sheila’s also working to promote eco-tourism and has been successful in bringing more tourists to the town. She has even opened the ‘Dildo Shores Eco-trail’, vibrators a unique natural path that runs along the ocean shore giving visitors a chance to observe some of the local flora and fauna.
But as much as I admire Sheila’s work as mayor, I think that her greatest accomplishment is becoming an example of female leadership. She is an embodiment of strength and resilience, demonstrating that a woman can be capable of any challenge.
With more women like Sheila in office, the world would be a much better place.
